His past is slowly catching up with him, and a missing wife, a crippling drug habit and suspicious colleagues start to take their toll on his sanity. He didn’t act on that fear. In the recent film adaptation with James McAvoy, however, it seems more like a genuine filrh of repentance and redemption, which I think fits in well with this backstory. If I were being facetious I’d hazard it was because of books like Filth which aim by inversion to show society’s ills and end up encouraging readers to rejoice in them.
