History is more than a recounting of the actions of great men, though credit is due to the author for including brief passages on women and also dipping his toes into cultural waters with discussions of Latin American novelists and poets, though a multitude of other cultural practices are ignored.
I found it a fascinating read, and I spent much of time comparing and contrasting our own American history U.

This is a story of joohn and hope, the processes of conquest and colonization, race mixing and class construction, revolution and republic formation, and the elusive quests for sustained economic growth and political and social equality.

This book was the required reading for a Latin American history class I took in college. This book moves very quickly and is very easy to read. The author also talks about the themes of history as it applies to today ib possible trends Latin American countries may take in the future, which I agree with.
Sometimes the book shoots off into tangents and hops around abruptly, but honestly that might be the by product of trying to synthesize nearly a millennia of history into a little over pages.
It would have been nice to get a little more insight into some of these leading players, but I understand the difficulty in recapping five hundred years of history for more than twenty countries in less than pages.

jphn Open Preview See a On Overall, I do think the positives outweigh the negatives with Born in Blood and Fire, I had a surprisingly good time reading it and I left this book with new knowledge of our complex, rich history. Three other editions have been published since, the most recent in It’s concise, clear, non-pretentious prose, not without its bias but not heavily so. All the kids are reading this one.

And there are some things which I like, like short “counter-narrative” chapters that showcases countervailing trends. It’s decent as the barest survey. Some introductory surveys have a way of making it seem like history was simple, and this text most assuredly did not.
As a layman to Latin American history, I find this book to be incredibly helpful. This book also helped me identify some feelings within my Latin American identity.
